About
The imagery used on banknotes often reflects significant aspects of a nation's identity and values. Hydraulic infrastructure, including major dams, agricultural schemes, and waterworks, plays a crucial role in national development and can symbolize engineering prowess and national pride. This research aims to explore how hydraulic infrastructure is represented on banknotes across various countries and time periods.
To guide this investigation, several research questions will be addressed. First, we seek to understand the geographic distribution of hydraulic infrastructure imagery on banknotes. Specifically, how is hydraulic infrastructure depicted across different geographic regions, and are there certain hotspots where particular types of hydraulic structures are more prominently featured?
Secondly, the study will examine the structural and temporal patterns of hydraulic infrastructure representation. We will investigate which types of hydraulic infrastructure—such as dams, bridges, or waterworks—are most frequently depicted and whether there are discernible patterns in the representation of these structures. Are certain types of infrastructure favoured more than others?
Another key area of focus will be the significance and iconography of hydraulic structures on banknotes. We aim to determine whether significant or iconic hydraulic infrastructure is more commonly represented compared to less prominent structures. Additionally, we will explore how these depictions reflect the perceived value or importance of these structures.
The research will also explore temporal changes in the representation of hydraulic infrastructure on banknotes. By analysing how these representations have evolved over time, we seek to identify any trends or shifts in the types or frequency of hydraulic infrastructure imagery on banknotes since 1950s.
Finally, we will investigate the decision-making processes behind the inclusion of hydraulic infrastructure on banknotes. This includes examining the factors that influence the selection of specific hydraulic structures, and how national and cultural values, as well as historical and economic contexts, impact these decisions.
