SCOM3008/6008 Science Communication Special Project and SCOM8000 Master of Science Communication Research Project
Develop an independent research or creative project aligned with CPAS research themes.
Students in these courses work with a staff member and convenor to develop their own project aligned with CPAS’s core research themes. Projects are strongly research informed, but can produce either a traditional output (such as a journal article) or a creative output (such as a documentary, picture book, or animation).
Some example project directions are:
- Climate and Planetary Health Communication Investigating how climate change, sustainability or energy transitions are communicated to the public, and how evidence and expertise are framed in public or policy debates.
- Science in Popular Culture Analysing how film, television, comics, public art or digital media shape public understandings of science and scientists.
- Hands‑on STEM Learning and Informal Education Designing and evaluating a hands‑on science engagement activity or studying how science centres, museums or live demonstrations communicate complex issues such as climate or health.
- Science‑Policy Interface and Equity Examining how emerging technologies (e.g., genomic newborn screening, AI in health, antimicrobial resistance) are framed in policy documents, or exploring issues of equity and sustainability in science‑policy debates.
- Science in history Investigating the relationship between science and society in the past, drawing on historical (primary) sources
If any of these areas spark interest, students are encouraged to reach out to the course convenor early to discuss feasibility and shape a project that aligns with their goals.
