CPAS researchers at AAHPSSS

30 November 2017

CPAS had a strong showing at the 2017 Australasian Association for the History, Philosophy and Social Studies of Science Conference as Mita Anggaryani, Tangyao Zhang, Dr Sean Perera, Dr Wendy Russell and Dr Lindy Orthia presented their research at the University of Wollongong.

Ms Anggaryani presented her PhD research on disaster communication in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, focusing on local behaviours and perspectives on risk during volcanic activity. She also briefly outlined the role of science communicators in promoting awareness of disaster risk reduction.

Dr Perera and Mr Zhang explored multicultural perspectives in science communication. They described the process of a group of science communicators who explored interdisciplinary approaches to understanding culture, a model for extending science communication scholarship.

Dr Russell led a workshop on dialogue in public engagement, drawing insights from her Science Dialogue course. The workshop focused on communicative practices, and on strengths and weaknesses academics bring to communication.

Dr Orthia argued for a new understanding of the origins of science and scientific thinking based on a historical approach, foregrounding the fields of science communication and science studies.
