About the talk -- Danger & Practical Wisdom: Public Views on Synthetic Biology in Australia
In 2020, CSIRO conducted a quantitative, survey-based study into public acceptance of, and attitudes towards, synthetic biology in Australia. They found broad openness, curiosity, and potential ‘intrinsic’ concerns. This current project expands this work. It's a qualitative study that tries to go deeper by asking the Australian public to openly discuss this emerging discipline and its application to various issues. The study is based on 14 demographically mixed focus groups conducted across the country. Participants were invited to talk freely about the field—what it represented to them, concerns they may or may not have, and messages they wanted to impart on decision makers. The results are intended to provide insight beyond 'acceptance vs. non-acceptance', into the in-depth perspectives of Australians regarding this transformative science.
