Sci comm careers

Science policy is a very overlooked but extremely essential field. Our alumni are working to create widespread change in this field. They engage as advisors or coordinators. They connect different perspectives of science across countries. They conduct relevant research that will inform laws that will shape society.

Jirana Boontanjai is a prominent Australian science communicator, microbiologist, and event organiser, known for her significant leadership roles, especially as a former Co-CEO of Pint of Science Australia, where she helped grow the science festival nationally. She also served as a Co-President for The Australian Science Communicators (ASC), developing their strategic vision, and brings expertise in science outreach, communication, and event curation.

"I always wanted to be a scientist, initially a zoologist, then a microbiologist, then a pathologist, and for a split second a biochemist. I then learnt about science communication and realised it was more my style and involved less calculations so I wanted to be an educator, facilitator, team leader, event organiser and now book writer." - from an interview with stemwoman.org.au

Heidi Parkes is an information extension officer at the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (Queensland). She works closely with horticultural industries, tackling challenges in pest management and agricultural technologies.

David Semmens is Project Manager (Indigenous Strategy) at the University of Melbourne. He is also science communicator and freelance science writer.

Don Gomez has worked various roles in cybersecurity and policy since graduating with his Masters in 2015, including, at one point, being the Assistant Director, Cyber Security Policy at the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science. Most recently, he is a Senior Manager as Consultancy Parbery.

Alyce Nehme is a Senior Community Engagement Advisor for the Water Corporation. She has been various engagement and coordination roles between organisations and local communities.
