About

Kei Kano, PhD in life science, is a visiting fellow at the Australian National Centre for the Public Awareness of Science at ANU. He is also a professor in the Science Communication Laboratory, Faculty of Education, Shiga University, Japan, and the Director of NISSAN Global Foundation.

Before this, he worked widely in science communication for school students, adults, and early-career scientists and science for science policy. He was an associate professor at the Science Communication Group, Institute for Integrated Cell-Material Sciences (iCeMS), Kyoto University, and a high school science teacher at Ritsumeikan Junior & Senior High School. He holds a B.S. in Biophysics, from the Faculty of Science, Kyoto University, and both an M.S. and Ph.D. from the Graduate School of Biostudies, Kyoto University.

He has been involved in developing two science education TV programs for primary and secondary school students by NHK; “Think like a Crow – Scientific Method” and “Viewpoint Science.”

He has twice (2017 and 2014) won the Prize for Science and Technology for his science communication practices and research by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) in Japan.

Research interests

His research interest is in inclusive, culturally relevant science communication/public engagement with women and the deaf community. His research and practice are also focused on the Ethical Legal Social Issues of AI in education/EdTech.
