Join us for a special CPAS seminar welcoming our new Director of Research, Associate Professor Sujatha Raman.

The topic is a panel discussion on Responsible Research and Innovation: What is it and what does it mean for Science Communication?

Speakers are our CPAS Director Professor Joan Leach, our incoming Associate Professor Sujatha Raman, Dr Fabien Medvecky from the University of Otago, and Dr Justine Lacey from CSIRO.

Professor Leach is Director of the Australian National Centre for Public Awareness of Science at The Australian National University. She is President of Australian Science Communicators and Chair of the National Committee for History and Philosophy of Science at the Australian Academy of Science. Her research centres on public engagement with science, medicine and technology. She has published extensively about science communication, including Rhetorical Questions of Health and Medicine, and was editor of the International journal, Social Epistemology. 

Associate Professor Raman is Director of Research at The Australian National Centre for the Public Awareness of Science. She is a member of the Science and Democracy Network (SDN), and researches forms of innovation and the public role of evidence and expertise, with reference to systemic grand challenges including antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and energy transitions. 

Dr Medvecky is Senior Lecturer at the University of Otago, and works on the interaction between science and society, focusing on the role of ethics and economics in social decisions around science. He publishes on ethics, economics, ecology, science communication and science policy. He is the sitting president of the Science Communicators’ Association of New Zealand.

Dr Lacey leads CSIRO’s Responsible Innovation Initiative, examining the interface between science, technology innovation and the associated ethical, social and legal consequences of new and disruptive science and technologies. She has collaborated with Australian and international colleagues to advance understanding and implementation of ethical climate adaptation research and practice, with an explicit focus on trust between scientists and policy makers.
