About the talk -- Women absent from STEM textbooks
Recently Tegan Clark and colleagues published a paper about gender representation in Australian senior science syllabuses. The study analysed the curriculum of four Year 11 and Year 12 STEM subjects taught in Australian schools — biology, chemistry, physics and environmental science. It found that Australian textbooks fail to mention the contributions of women in STEM, and instead focus almost exclusively on a male-centric narrative. In fact, only three states or territories mentioned the work of a female science leader in their school curriculums at all.
The paper was published by a group of researchers from all different institutions as part of our work as volunteers for IncludeHer.
