New researcher joining CPAS!
The Centre for the Public Awareness of Science welcomes Dr Alaa Barhoum to our research team!

Alaa will be working with Dr Ehsan Nabavi on Responsible Innovation teaching into the College of Engineering, Computing and Cybernetics.
She comes to us from UNSW - Canberra. Her PhD is from the School of Engineering and Information Technology (SEIT) at UNSW Canberra, where she specialized in Nuclear Medical Imaging and in the design and evaluation of a novel lens-based SPECT system based on Laue lens gamma diffraction.
Alaa's research involved using advanced Monte Carlo simulations to study the feasibility and performance of innovative imaging systems to enhance the imaging capabilities in nuclear medicine, enabling high-resolution and accurate diagnosis for various medical conditions. Her research contributions directly contribute to the advancement of biomedical engineering, with publications in respected journals such as Medical Physics, Physica Medica, and Scientific Reports.
She knows CPAS work in Responsible Innovation and has been an active mentor at the rHack hackathon in responsible innovation. While she has a science/engineering background, she is keen to contribute to teaching on the wider social and ethical aspects of new technologies.
