Where’s your energy come from when you plug in, cook up or get moving? And how is it changing? Join Dr Graham Walker from the ANU to discover the science and technology behind Canberra’s transition to clean energy in this fun, interactive family science show. Using thrilling live science demonstrations, we’ll explore how Canberra’s electricity has moved from fossil fuels to renewable energies like wind and solar, pilot e-transport innovations like electric skateboards and experimental electric vehicles, learn about electric cars and transport emissions, and look at emerging technologies like fuel cells, carbon capture and hydrogen. We’ll electrolyse – literally split – water unlocking the energy within it, race solar powered dragracers, blast natural gas-fired marshmallow bazookas, and even test wearable wind turbines! Alongside the science, the show will also dig into the environmental, social and community side of our transition to clean energy.

For those keen for some DIY, the shows will also launch a booklet of climate and energy activities suitable for teachers and for parents to try at home with their kids. The booklet is available as a free download (please note safety advice, some activities require adult involvement/supervision and are not suitable for young children).

Canberra is the first capital city outside Europe to have 100% renewably sourced electricity… come and celebrate the journey and where it will take us next. An initiative of the ANU National Centre for the Public Awareness of Science with support from the Winter Innovation Festival.
