Sci Com Society

The Science Communication Society is a student led society for undergraduate and postgraduate students of the ANU. Students interested in science and science communication get together and hear from researchers at CPAS, interact with members of the science communication community of Canberra and have fun watching movies and discussing science in the real world.

Many of the members of the society are students at CPAS and take the chance to learn more about their field of study out of class time. The members often aim to build connections with other communicators from around Canberra, while finding career pathways for when they graduate.

The society reaches out to the broader ANU and Canberra community in several ways:
  • social events that foster interaction between attendees and give chances to students to meet new people and talk about  science.
  • the society's Facebook page features active discussions about current science news as well as volunteering and career opportunities as they come up. Anyone can join in and contribute their thoughts and ideas and get feedback about them.
  • the society also organises an annual ANU based science festival as part of the National Science Week. This gives students from all disciplines a look at various science activities happening on campus and around Canberra, as well as the wide variety of Science Week activities also happening around the country.
  • by sponsoring one of the weekly CPAS seminars, the society connects its members with the whole ANU science communication community. This goes from the director of the centre through to the various honours and PhD students, each with a different background and outlook on science communication.
