Jason Major

PhD Researcher

BSc (Hons) (La Trobe), M Sci Com (ANU)

Jason completed a BSc (Hons) at La Trobe University then wandered the world for a bit. In hindsight, it was a time for reflection on what he wanted to do with his life. Following his return from his last real journey, instead of taking a science job, he studied journalism for a bit before discovering CPAS. In 1998 he started his MSc at CPAS and then entered the world of science communication where he has been ever since.

He has worked for CSIRO and the University of Melbourne as a science communicator/writer and his last job before commencing the PhD was manager of a public engagement program at the University of Melbourne. Jason's role in this last position was to engage the public on the science and issues connected to emerging technologies - essentially all the controversial stuff. This thrust him into the GM food and food security debate. It was digging around in this space that he got interested in the research aspect and particularly the topic of his PhD.

For a number of years Jason was secretary and treasurer of the Victorian branch of Australian Science Communicators. He has been tutoring first and second year science students in science communication at Deakin University and is in the process of writing a chapter for a textbook on science communication for undergraduates.
